OUR STORY

Gohel Farms: A Legacy of Innovation and Resilience

Gohel Farms is a proud 4th-generation family-owned and operated venture, deeply rooted in the rich agricultural history of our community. Spanning two villages on either side of Aji Dam No. 4, the farm's journey began with a pioneering spirit embodied by Pragji Karsan Gohel, a visionary of the second generation. Faced with the challenges of water scarcity, limited financial resources, and pest control, he embraced innovative practices to transform farming in the region.

Pragji Karsan was instrumental in cultivating sugarcane and chili on a large scale. He transported his harvests to the market yard of Jamnagar, 60 kilometers away, and processed sugarcane juice into jaggery for year-round consumption. During a time when commercial farming was a novelty, he got introduced to genetically modified (GMO) BT cotton seeds, which were pest-resistant and yielded better crops. With determination, he traveled from village to village, educating farmers about the benefits of these seeds, earning him the nickname "Paga BT" as he rode his motorcycle, a white turban atop his head and bags of seeds in tow.

Under his leadership, Gohel Farms expanded significantly, creating numerous job opportunities, adopting modern machinery, and diversifying its crops to include chilly, cumin, cotton, green gram, wheat, tobacco, watermelon, and groundnut.

The true expansion of Gohel Farms took shape under the stewardship of his two sons, Mahesh and Ashok. Mahesh, with his expertise in accounting, paired with Ashok’s passion for technology and hands-on farming, revolutionized operations. Ashok serves as the chief equipment operator and farm technician, driving the farm's efficiency and productivity. Together, they have cultivated a remarkable production capacity of 60 tonnes/year, supported by a dedicated workforce of over 50 individuals and a well-developed underground water connection.

At Gohel Farms, we cherish the collective efforts and unwavering support of everyone involved in this journey. Our legacy is built on innovation, hard work, and a commitment to sustainable farming practices, ensuring that we not only honor our past but also cultivate a thriving future for generations to come.

OUR VISION

At Gohel Farms, we consider ourselves fortunate to be situated next to a vast dam, which has become a cornerstone of our sustainable growth. We are proud to highlight our achievement in establishing inter-farm underground water connectivity—a visionary project initially proposed by our pioneer, Pragji Karsan Gohel, and brought to fruition by his sons in collaboration with the government and fellow farmers. This multipoint water access system, spanning 3.5 kilometers, has revolutionized water availability for agriculture, marking a significant milestone in our history.

This innovative project ensures that when rainfall is delayed or seasons are shorter than expected, our crops have the necessary water during critical growth phases. As we expand, access to water is paramount for achieving better yields and sustaining our agricultural practices.

In addition to our water initiatives, we take pride in our investment in machinery and processes that enhance efficiency, from land tilling to crop harvesting, as well as logistics and packaging. Our commitment to sustainability extends to various practices, including:

  • Water Conservation: We are actively drilling recharge bore wells and developing storage solutions to optimize water use.
  • Solar Energy: The installation of solar panels reflects our dedication to renewable energy and reducing our carbon footprint.
  • Apiculture: We promote honey production and pollination through beekeeping, supporting biodiversity and crop health.
  • Vegetable Gardening: Our focus on vegetable cultivation contributes to food security and healthy eating.
  • Slope Alignment: We implement slope management to improve water runoff and minimize erosion.
  • Fruit Tree Planting: By planting fruit trees, we enhance biodiversity and contribute to soil health.
  • Soil Regeneration: We enrich our soil by using sea bed topsoil and manure, fostering a vibrant ecosystem of soil microorganisms.
